Description
The Siamese Algae Eater is one of the most effective and popular algae-eating fish in the aquarium hobby. It is especially valued for its ability to consume stubborn algae types like black beard algae (BBA). It has a slender, streamlined body with a distinct black horizontal stripe running from nose to tail, giving it a clean and functional appearance.
Native Location
This species originates from Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, where it inhabits flowing rivers, streams, and flooded forest areas.
Size
Adult Siamese Algae Eaters can grow to about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches), making them suitable for medium to large aquariums.
Care Requirements
They thrive in well-oxygenated aquariums with moderate water flow and a temperature range of 24–28°C. A tank with plants, driftwood, and open swimming space is ideal. While they are excellent algae eaters when young, their diet should be supplemented with vegetable-based foods, algae wafers, and occasional protein-rich foods as they mature.
Temperament
Siamese Algae Eaters are generally peaceful and active, making them suitable for community tanks. They do best when kept singly or in small groups, though minor chasing can occur among themselves. They coexist well with most non-aggressive fish and are constantly on the move, helping keep the tank clean.
