Dalmatian Molly (Poecilia sphenops)

Description

The Dalmatian Molly is a popular livebearer known for its unique black-and-white spotted pattern, resembling a Dalmatian dog. Each fish has a slightly different pattern, making every individual visually distinct. Hardy and active, they are a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists, adding contrast and movement to community aquariums.

Native Location

Mollies are native to Central and South America, found in freshwater and brackish environments such as rivers, estuaries, and coastal lagoons.

Size

Adult Dalmatian Mollies typically grow to about 6–10 cm (2.5–4 inches), depending on care and tank conditions.

Care Requirements

Dalmatian Mollies thrive in slightly alkaline, hard water with a temperature range of 24–28°C. They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open swimming space. While they can live in freshwater, they often benefit from slightly brackish conditions. Regular water changes and stable parameters help maintain their health. As livebearers, they reproduce easily, so population control may be necessary.

Temperament

This species is peaceful, active, and social, making it ideal for community tanks. They do well with other livebearers, tetras, and similarly sized peaceful fish. Keeping them in small groups helps them feel secure and display natural behaviour.
