Description
The Cherry Barb is a small and colorful freshwater fish well known for its deep red coloration, especially in males. Females are usually lighter with a more subdued color. Their peaceful nature, attractive appearance, and active schooling behavior make them a popular choice for community and planted aquariums.
Native Location
Native to slow-moving streams and rivers in Sri Lanka, where they inhabit shaded waters with dense vegetation.
Size
Grows up to about 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches) in length.
Care Requirements
Cherry Barbs thrive in planted aquariums with plenty of hiding places and open swimming areas. Ideal water temperature is 23–27°C with slightly acidic to neutral pH. They are omnivorous and accept a variety of foods including flakes, micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp.
Temperament
Peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with other small, calm fish. They are best kept in groups of 6 or more, which helps them feel secure and display their natural schooling behavior.
