Black Ricefish (Oryzias latipes)
Description
The Black Ricefish, also known as Black Medaka, is a small and hardy fish known for its deep black or dark charcoal body coloration. Its subtle shine and active swimming behaviour make it a unique addition to nano and planted aquariums.
Native Location
Ricefish originate from East Asia, particularly Japan, China, and Korea, where they inhabit rice paddies, ponds, and slow-moving streams. The black variety is a selectively bred strain.
Size
Adult fish typically grow up to 3–4 cm (around 1.5 inches) in length.
Care Requirements
Black Ricefish are very adaptable and thrive in aquariums with gentle filtration and open swimming space. Ideal water temperature ranges between 20–26°C, though they can tolerate slightly cooler water. They should be kept in groups of at least 6 fish and will accept flakes, micro pellets, and small live or frozen foods.
Temperament
Peaceful and active schooling fish. They are well suited for community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive species.
