Assassin Snail (Clea helena)
Description
The Assassin Snail is a distinctive freshwater snail recognized for its yellow and dark brown striped shell. Unlike most snails, it is a natural predator that feeds on other snails, making it a popular choice for controlling pest snail populations in aquariums.
Native Location
Native to freshwater rivers and streams in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Size
Grows to about 2–3 cm (around 1 inch) in shell length.
Care Requirements
Assassin Snails prefer aquariums with soft substrate where they can burrow. Ideal water temperature ranges between 22–28°C. They primarily feed on other snails but can also accept sinking pellets and protein-based foods when prey is limited.
Temperament
Peaceful toward fish and shrimp but predatory toward other snails. Best kept in community aquariums where pest snail control is desired.
