Apple Snail (Pomacea spp.)
Description
Apple Snails are large and attractive freshwater snails known for their round shells and active behaviour. They are often seen moving across aquarium glass and décor while grazing on algae and leftover food. Their bright colours, especially golden varieties, make them a popular addition to planted and community aquariums.
Native Location
Native to freshwater rivers, ponds, and wetlands in South America.
Size
Can grow up to 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) in shell diameter under good conditions.
Care Requirements
Apple Snails prefer clean, well-maintained aquariums with temperatures between 20–28°C. They require a steady supply of food such as algae, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables. Calcium-rich water helps maintain strong shells.
Temperament
Peaceful and non-aggressive. Apple Snails are compatible with most community fish but should not be kept with snail-eating species.
