Panduro Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma panduro)
Description
Apistogramma panduro, commonly called the Panduro Dwarf Cichlid or Panda Apisto, is a beautiful dwarf cichlid known for its bluish body, yellow highlights, and distinctive dark markings near the face and tail. Males display more vibrant colours and extended fins, while females become bright yellow when guarding eggs or fry. Their attractive colours and interesting breeding behaviour make them popular among aquarists who enjoy South American dwarf cichlids.
Native Location
Native to the upper Amazon River basin in Peru, particularly in slow-moving forest streams and tributaries with sandy substrates and leaf litter.
Size
Males grow up to about 7–8 cm (2.8–3 inches), while females usually reach 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).
Care Requirements
Apistogramma panduro prefer aquariums with soft sand substrate, driftwood, plants, and caves that provide hiding places and breeding sites. Ideal water temperature is 24–28°C. They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water and accept a variety of foods including quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
Temperament
Generally peaceful but territorial, especially during breeding. Best kept as a pair or a small harem in a well-structured aquarium with plenty of hiding places. They can be kept with small, peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras.
