Description
Apistogramma macmasteri is a colourful and hardy dwarf cichlid popular among aquarists who enjoy South American cichlids. Males display striking red, orange, and blue tones along their fins and body, often with elongated dorsal and tail fins. Females are smaller and more subdued in colour but turn a bright yellow when guarding eggs or fry. Their beautiful colours and interesting breeding behaviour make them a favourite for planted aquariums.
Native Location
This species originates from Colombia, particularly within the Orinoco River basin, where it inhabits slow-moving streams, forest creeks, and shallow waters rich in leaf litter and submerged roots.
Size
Adult males typically grow to around 5–7 cm (2–2.7 inches), while females usually reach about 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).
Care Requirements
Apistogramma macmasteri thrives in soft to moderately hard water with a temperature range of 24–28°C. A well-planted aquarium with driftwood, leaf litter, and caves provides the ideal environment. Since they are cave spawners, small shelters such as coconut shells, rock caves, or ceramic tubes should be provided. Gentle filtration and stable water conditions help maintain their health and coloration.
Temperament
This species is generally peaceful but mildly territorial, especially during breeding. They can be kept as pairs or in small harems with one male and multiple females in larger aquariums. Apistogramma macmasteri does well in community tanks with peaceful fish like small tetras, rasboras, and other non-aggressive species. Plenty of hiding places will help reduce territorial disputes.
