Description

Apistogramma hongsloi is a striking dwarf cichlid known for its elegant body shape and vibrant coloration. Males display a beautiful mix of soft blue tones with distinctive red markings along the fins and body, while females are more subdued but develop a bright yellow coloration when guarding eggs or fry. Their graceful movement and interesting behaviour make them a favourite among aquarists who enjoy keeping dwarf cichlids in planted aquariums.

Native Location

This species originates from the Orinoco River basin in Colombia, where it inhabits slow-moving streams, small tributaries, and flooded forest areas with leaf litter and soft substrates.

Size

Adult males typically grow to about 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches), while females remain slightly smaller at around 4 cm (1.5 inches).

Care Requirements

Apistogramma hongsloi thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with plenty of plants, driftwood, and hiding places. A temperature of 24–28°C works best. Providing caves or coconut shells is important, as these fish are cave spawners and like to establish small territories. Gentle filtration and stable water conditions help them display their best colours and natural behaviours.

Temperament

This species is generally peaceful but territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept in pairs or harems in well-structured aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. Apistogramma hongsloi can be kept with other peaceful community fish such as small tetras and rasboras, provided there is enough space and cover in the tank.
