Description
Apistogramma cacatuoides “Double Red” is a popular color variant of the Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid. Males are especially striking, displaying vivid red coloration on both the dorsal and caudal fins, which gives rise to the name “Double Red.” Their elongated dorsal fin rays resemble a cockatoo’s crest, adding to their appeal. Females are smaller and less colorful but develop a bright yellow coloration when guarding eggs or fry.

Native Location
The species Apistogramma cacatuoides originates from the Amazon River basin in South America, particularly in Peru and Brazil, where it inhabits slow-moving streams and tributaries with sandy substrates and leaf litter.

Size
Males grow up to about 8–9 cm (3–3.5 inches), while females usually reach 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).

Care Requirements
Double Red Apistogramma prefer aquariums with soft sand substrate, driftwood, plants, and caves that provide shelter and breeding sites. Ideal water temperature is 24–28°C. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water and accept a variety of foods including quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Temperament
Generally peaceful but territorial during breeding. They are best kept as a pair or a small harem in a well-structured aquarium with plenty of hiding places. Suitable tank mates include small, peaceful fish such as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras.
