Description
Apistogramma borellii, commonly known as the Umbrella Dwarf Cichlid, is a small and attractive South American cichlid admired for its shimmering blue body and yellow highlights. Males often display extended dorsal fins that resemble an umbrella, giving the species its common name. During breeding, females develop a bright yellow coloration and actively guard eggs and fry. Its relatively peaceful nature makes it one of the easier Apistogramma species for aquarists.

Native Location
Native to slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains in South America, particularly in Paraguay, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina.

Size
Males grow up to about 6–7 cm (2.5–3 inches), while females typically reach 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).

Care Requirements
Apistogramma borellii prefer aquariums with soft substrate, plants, driftwood, and caves that provide shelter and breeding sites. Ideal water temperature is 22–26°C, slightly cooler than many other Apistogramma species. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water and accept a variety of foods including quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.

Temperament
Generally peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with small, calm fish. They may become territorial during breeding but are usually less aggressive than many other dwarf cichlids. Best kept as a pair or a small harem in a well-structured aquarium with plenty of hiding places.
