Description
Apistogramma agassizii “Alenquer” is a stunning locality variant of Agassiz’s dwarf cichlid, prized for its elongated body, flowing fins, and intense red-orange and blue coloration. Males often display a beautifully extended lyre-shaped tail and vivid patterning, while females are more subdued but turn a bright yellow during breeding. This variety is especially sought after for its elegance and striking presence in planted aquariums.
Native Location
This variant originates from the Amazon Basin in Brazil, particularly around the Alenquer region, where it inhabits slow-moving blackwater streams, flooded forest areas, and leaf-litter-rich environments.
Size
Adult males grow to about 7–9 cm (2.7–3.5 inches), while females remain smaller at around 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).
Care Requirements
Apistogramma agassizii “Alenquer” thrives in soft, acidic water with a temperature range of 24–28°C. A well-structured aquarium with driftwood, leaf litter, plants, and caves is essential. As cave spawners, they require hiding spots such as coconut shells or rock caves. Dim lighting and tannin-rich water help replicate their natural habitat and enhance coloration. Stable water parameters are key to their health and breeding success.
Temperament
This species is peaceful but territorial, especially during breeding. Best kept as a pair or in a harem setup (one male with multiple females) in larger tanks. They coexist well with small, peaceful fish like tetras and pencilfish, provided there is enough space and cover to reduce territorial conflicts.
